About the book

The book "Inflammatory Cardiac Diseases" provides a comprehensive and up-to-date exploration of critical inflammatory conditions affecting the heart, specifically myocarditis and pericarditis. These conditions, although both involve inflammation, affect different parts of the heart. Myocarditis refers to the inflammation of the myocardium, the muscular tissue of the heart. It is often caused by viral infections but can also result from bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections. Additionally, autoimmune reactions, certain medications, and exposure to toxins can contribute to myocarditis. This inflammation can weaken the heart muscle, impairing its ability to pump blood effectively, and symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, rapid or irregular heartbeats, and swelling in the legs. Pericarditis is the inflammation of the pericardium, the thin, double-layered sac surrounding the heart. The pericardium contains a small amount of fluid between its layers to facilitate smooth heart movement within the chest. Pericarditis can arise from viral or bacterial infections, inflammatory disorders, heart attacks, or chest injuries. The condition can cause sharp, stabbing chest pain that may worsen with breathing or lying down. Pericarditis may also lead to the accumulation of excess fluid in the pericardial sac (pericardial effusion), potentially compressing the heart and impairing its function. Both myocarditis and pericarditis are serious inflammatory cardiac conditions that necessitate medical attention. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests, imaging studies (such as echocardiograms), and sometimes a biopsy. Treatment options may include medications to reduce inflammation, manage symptoms, and address the underlying cause. In severe cases, hospitalization might be required. It is crucial for individuals experiencing symptoms of heart inflammation to seek prompt medical care. Authored by leading experts in cardiology and immunology, this book combines cutting-edge research findings with practical clinical perspectives. It offers a valuable resource for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students in the field, providing insights into the latest diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for managing these complex inflammatory cardiac diseases.
