With the continuous improvement of user communication requirements and the rapid development of information services, optical wireless communication (OWC), which has unlimited bandwidth and precise positioning, is widely used in indoor scenes such as healthcare. For healthcare monitoring application, the optical wireless (OW) link using non-Lambertian emission pattern is investigated in the typical mobility scenario. Numerical results show that the potential gain could been provided by the concerned emission pattern to the OW performance uniformity.

In upcoming 6G era, free space optical wireless communications (FSOC) are viewed as promising enabling techniques for backhaul and access of next-generation wireless networks. Channel modeling and characterization is the essential composition to predict FSOC system performance and feature, especially for outdoor application. Objectively, light emitting diodes (LED) are the popular and cost-efficient optical sources for short- and middle-range outdoor FSOC links. Up to know, the concerned LED beams are assumed to follow the well-known Lambertian radiation patterns for outdoor FSOC domain, which actually ignore the diversity and effect of the non-Lambertian radiation patterns of the commercially customized LEDs. For addressing the above issue, typical LUXEON Rebel non-Lambertian optical beam is adopted to configure the distinct LED beams-based outdoor FSOC links. Numerical results illustrate that more dispersive horizontal coverage characteristic could be derived from the LUXEON Rebel non-Lambertian FSOC links.

Objectively, the conventional radio frequency (RF) are already overcrowded and could not afford the diverse emerging services, including augmented reality, mixed reality, 8K video, and self-driving vehicles. For addressing the upcoming capacity demand and performance metric challenges of 6G networks, it is essential to explore and integrate the novel free space optical (FSO) techniques and wireless communications techniques to inherit the complementary fundamental characteristics simultaneously. On one hand, FSO techniques are license-free, inherent physically secure, and relatively low in infrastructure costs. On the other hand, the wireless communication techniques are capable of providing sufficient robustness, ubiquitous coverage, and higher maturity. Therefore, for designing and developing the future-oriented 6G networks, the researchers from the academic and industry community consistently make contribution and proposed novel schemes, the relevant topics and important analysis of which is touched included by the each chapters of this book, from the view of the FSO and wireless communication separately.
