Tiago Falk

received the BSc degree from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2002, and the MSc and PhD degrees from Queen’s University, Canada, in 2005 and 2008, respectively, all in electrical engineering. In 2007, he was a visiting Research Fellow at the Sound and Image Processing Lab, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, and in 2008 at the Quality and Usability Lab, Deutsche Telekom/TU Berlin, Germany. From 2009-2010 he was an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow at Holland-Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, affiliated with the University of Toronto. He joined the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS) in Montreal, Canada in Dec. 2010 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. In 2015, he was promoted to tenured Associate Professor. He is also an Adjunct Professor at McGill University (ECE Dept.) and an Affiliate Researcher at Concordia University (PERFORM Centre). At INRS, he heads the Multimedia/Multimodal Signal Analysis and Enhancement (MuSAE) Laboratory. Prof. Falk is a Senior Member of the IEEE, an elected member of the Global Young Academy (GYA), a member of the Sigma Xi Research Society, Academic Chair of the Canadian Biomedical and Biological Engineering Society, Co-Chair of the IEEE SMC Brain-Machine Interface Technical Committee, and member of the IEEE SPS Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing Technical Committee. His research interests lie at the crossroads of telecommunications and biomedical engineering with particular focus on the development of affective human-machine interfaces and anthropomorphic, human-inspired multimedia technologies. Together with his research team, he has published over 280 journal and conference papers, book chapters and patents in these domains. He is Editor of the book ‘Signal Processing and Machine Learning for Biomedical Big Data’ (CRC Press, 2018). His work has been cited (February 2020, Google Scholar) ca. 4000 times, resulting in an h-index=33. His work has also resulted in numerous awards, including the 3rd place Best Paper Award at CMBEC’19, the Best Paper Award at QoMEx’2018, the EURASIP Best Paper Award (Speech Communication, 2017), the Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award (2016), the Prix Rayonnement Bell (2015), the CMBES Early Career Achievement Award (2015), the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Information Science, Signal Processing and their Applications (2012), the IBBME Best Paper Award (Category: Engineering in a Clinical Setting, 2010), the Top-5 New & Notable Award at Canadian Conference on Dementia (2011), the IEEE Kingston Section Ph.D. Research Excellence Award (2008), the Eberhard Haensler Best Student Paper Award at the International Workshop on Acoustic Echo and Noise Control (2008), the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (2005), and the Professor Newton Maia Young Scientist Award (2002). Over the course of his career, Prof. Falk has trained over 80 highly qualified personnel (HQP), many of who received prestigious national and international scholarships (e.g., Science without Borders, FQRNT Quebec Merit Scholarship for Foreign Students, Colciencias, Erasmus Mundus, NSERC CREATE PERSWADE, FRQNT MSc Research Scholarship, ELAP, Bogue Research Fellowship, DAAD, MITACS), prizes (e.g., Prix d’excellence du recteur, Tableau d’honneur du vice-recteur à la recherche et aux affaires académiques, Best MSc thesis), and awards (e.g., Wearhacks 2014 Most Creative Award, AngelHacks 2015 Award, SYTACom, QBIN, CIRMMT, ISCA, and NSERC CREATE BIP Travel awards). The majority of former HQP has continued with their higher education training, been hired by top Canadian technology firms (e.g., OMSignal, Interaxon, Myant, Ludia, SAP) or by government agencies (e.g., Alberta Health Services, Canadian Institute for Health Information), created their own start-ups (e.g., Avertus), or are working abroad (e.g., faculty members at Santiago de Cali University and University of Memphis). Prof. Falk is Area Editor of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, a member of the Editorial Board of the Quality and User Experience (Springer) journal, the Journal of the Canadian Acoustical Association, IEEE Canada Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the International Journal of Healthcare Engineering. He has served as Guest Editor to Special Issues in the Journal of Medical and Biological Engineering, Frontiers in Neurology, the EURASIP Journal on Audio, Speech & Music Processing, and the Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has served numerous roles in dozens of national and international conferences and has served as a technical program committee member on over 40 conferences.
